New INVOLVE Report launched 6th November 2009

Exploring Impact: Public involvement in NHS, public health and social care research

This new INVOLVE report was launched on Friday 6th November 2009 by Professor Dame Sally Davies, Director General of Research and Development at the Department of Health.

This report explores the impact of public involvement through an in-depth review of published literature.

It draws together a wealth of examples of how public involvement is conducted, and what difference it is making. But it also raises questions of the quality of the evidence for the impact of such involvement, revealing huge variation in how this is assessed and reported and highlighting difficulties in judging it or drawing general conclusions.

However, although there is not a consistent approach to assessing impact, or describing it, the same benefits and costs are being consistently reported:

- in clinical research it was found to be of particular value in ensuring acceptability of trials, and that participants felt them to be ethical, well-designed and have relevant outcome measures

- public involvement was reported to help increase recruitment to all types of research

- public involvement was reported to be of value in qualitative research

Senior Investigators and Public Involvement

This paper has been produced by INVOLVE on behalf of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) for the Senior Investigators Conference, November 2009.

The information provided in this document about the work of the Senior Investigators was taken, with their consent, from the applications for membership of 31 of this first wave of appointments.

We have selected these examples to illustrate the wide range of activities and the different ways that Senior Investigators are involving the public across all stages of the research process. However other Senior Investigators, not included in the paper, also cited examples demonstrating how they were involving the public.

We believe that this document will be of interest to researchers, both to highlight the potential for greater public involvement amongst other researchers, as well as providing an understanding of why researchers are increasingly valuing public input.

You can download a copy of the Senior Investigators and Public Involvement paper here.

If you would like to order a hard copy of the paper please email admin@invo.org.uk or telephone 02380 651088

Come and see INVOLVE at the NIHR Regional research conferences - Committed to better research in the NHS

The NIHR is organising a series of health research conferences with each Strategic Health Authority throughout 2009.

These joint events aim to promote the benefits of research, showcase local activity and engage further with local NHS staff and academics so that they can understand more fully the range of opportunities available through the NIHR to undertake and lead health and social care research to improve patient care and NHS services.

In addition to the plenary sessions, there will be an interactive exhibition where delegates can talk to representatives from the different NIHR programmes and coordinating centres, view on-line demonstrations and participate in interactive seminars. Each conference will be tailored to the particular research needs of each region.

INVOLVE will be at each of these events throughout the year. We look forward to seeing you at one of them.

Patient and public involvement in research and research ethics committee review – guidance developed by the National Research Ethics Service (NRES) and INVOLVE

This statement has been developed by the National Research Ethics Service (NRES) and INVOLVE to provide clarity and guidance on patient and public involvement in research and the requirements of research ethics review.  The statement has been approved by the NRES Advisory Group on NHS Service Users and Ethical Review.

INVOLVE DVD

We have produced a short film, which outlines why and how people are getting actively involved in research and highlights some of the differences that public involvement is making.

The film was originally developed for the NHS Alliance Conference 2008 and features:

Nick Partridge

Nick is Chief Executive of the Terrence Higgins Trust and Chair of INVOLVE

Angela Barnard.

Angela is a service user and carer, and a member of the NIHR board and INVOLVE.

Jenny Walton and David Wright.

David Wright is a researcher who worked with patients and service users on the Macmillan Listening study.

Jenny is a cancer patient who worked with David on the study.

Michael Turner

Michael is a disabled writer and user researcher

Ade Adebajo

Ade is a Consultant Physician in Rheumatology, at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and a member of INVOLVE.

DVDs of the film are available from the Coordinating Centre on 02380 651088 or by emailing admin@invo.org.uk

6th National Conference

‘Public involvement in research: getting it right and making a difference'

Thank you to everybody who attended our conference in Nottingham and helped to make it such a successful and enjoyable event.

On day 2 of the conference Judy Scott and Alison Faulkner ran a Single Issue Workshop "Payment for involvement in research: helpful benefit rules and systems for avoiding benefit problems" Judy Scott developed a handout for this workshop outlining some helpful information on benefit rules and systems.

The Conference Report, as well as the conference abstracts and many of the presentations are now available.

National Research Ethics Service

We are pleased to be working with the National Research Ethics Service to undertake a survey of lay Research Ethics Committee members on their behalf. We hope to find out more about who they are, the perspectives they bring and any support they need.

The Survey of Lay Members of Research Ethics Committees (RECs) report is now available.

To find out more about our work please visit the other sections in About INVOLVE and read the INVOLVE Operational Plan 2008-2009 and INVOLVE Strategic Plan 2007-2011.
